Bold statement: Eidos-Montreal is expanding its staffing but also trimming more roles, signaling a troubling mix of growth dreams and financial pressures.
Eidos-Montreal, the studio behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and a longtime collaborator on Tomb Raider titles, has announced additional layoffs. Over the past week, several former employees have publicly shared on LinkedIn that they are no longer with the company.
Gameplay director Samuel Daher opened the discussions with a post that read, “Hey there! Was working at Eidos, loved it and would have stayed, but times are difficult.” Several others echoed similar sentiments, indicating that at least a dozen people have begun a job search anew.
This marks the second major round of layoffs at the studio. A larger wave totaling about 75 employees occurred in March, with officials citing mandates ending as the reason for those cuts. Since then, the outlook has shifted from stabilization to ongoing uncertainty.
Multiple sources cited to Insider Gaming suggest that most of Eidos-Montreal’s projects have been canceled. The studio reportedly remains focused on collaborations with Microsoft and Xbox, including Grounded 2 and a new Fable project. There’s also mention of an internal project that started in 2019, which, according to insiders, is unlikely to recoup its current expenditures.
Looking ahead, insiders say that once these current efforts wrap, more staff reductions are anticipated. Attempts to obtain a formal comment from Eidos-Montreal or its parent company Embracer have so far gone unanswered. Historically, Embracer has been reticent about issuing official statements regarding layoffs or internal development plans.
