Bangladesh's Cricketer Nahid Rana Fined for Code of Conduct Breach
Dubai: In a recent development, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined Bangladesh pacer Nahid Rana for a breach of the Code of Conduct during the first Test against Ireland in Sylhet. The incident occurred on the second day of the match, sparking a debate among cricket enthusiasts.
The breach was related to Article 2.9 of the ICC's Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which specifically addresses the inappropriate and/or dangerous throwing of a ball or any other cricket equipment towards a player during an international match. This rule is in place to ensure the safety and fair play of all participants.
According to the ICC, Level 1 offences carry a minimum sanction of an official reprimand and can result in a fine of up to 50 percent of the player's match fee. The statement further clarified that Level 1 breaches are taken very seriously, with a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of the player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.
In this case, Nahid Rana was fined 25 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point, marking his first offense in 24 months. The incident occurred during the 27th over of Ireland's innings when Rana, in his follow-through, threw the ball back towards Cade Carmichael, which hit him on the pads. Despite this, the batter did not move off the popping crease, which is a crucial aspect of the game.
Rana admitted to the offence and accepted the charge proposed by ICC match referee Andy Pycroft of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. The charge was supported by on-field umpires Sam Nogajski and Ahsan Raza, as well as third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Tanvir Ahmed, ensuring a thorough investigation.
Despite the fine, it's worth noting that Mahmudul Hasan Joy's impressive Test score of 169* showcased Bangladesh's strong performance on day two against Ireland. The Tigers ended their day on a high, leading by 52 runs after bowling out Ireland for 286 in the opening hours of the day's play.
This incident highlights the importance of maintaining a high level of sportsmanship and adherence to the rules, even in the heat of the game. It serves as a reminder that every action on the field has consequences and can impact the overall integrity of the sport.
