Sadiq Khan: Authentic Green Investment Needed! | Labour Budget Call (2025)

A bold call for action has been made by Sadiq Khan, urging the government to embrace its true potential and deliver an 'authentic' Labour budget that prioritizes green investment. Khan, the Mayor of London, believes that the current administration lacks the confidence to present viable solutions to the nation's problems.

In a powerful statement made ahead of the C40 World Mayors Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Khan emphasized the importance of supporting Energy Secretary Ed Miliband's pursuit of an ambitious 81% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. He argued that the public would appreciate a government that stands firm against those who claim net zero policies are exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis.

"The public can sense when someone is being inauthentic," Khan said. "Authenticity is key to earning respect. Even those who may not agree with my policies respect my good intentions and the explanations I provide."

Khan, who won an unprecedented third term as Mayor last May, acknowledged that 15 months in power is not enough to transform a nation, but he expressed concerns about the government's lack of clarity and purpose.

"We must demonstrate to the public that we have the answers to their challenges," he asserted. "When we try to be something we're not, people can sense it."

Khan believes that the Treasury's approach may be outdated and that the cabinet needs to present a united front on the green agenda. He emphasized the potential for economic growth and job creation through tackling the climate emergency.

"The Prime Minister's attendance at the Cop30 climate summit in Brazil sends a powerful message," Khan explained. "It signals our seriousness and our potential global leadership role."

Khan has been advocating for investment in major Transport for London projects, such as the proposed Docklands Light Railway extension to Thamesmead. He sees this as an opportunity to create 'green jobs' and address the welfare bill crisis by training Londoners for these new roles.

"A green job is not just about being a skilled plumber or electrician; it's about having the expertise to install heat pumps, support net zero initiatives, and contribute to electric bus fleets," he elaborated.

As for Chancellor Rachel Reeves' upcoming budget, Khan hopes it will prioritize green investment and job creation.

"I believe this budget should be a whole-government effort to support green jobs and tackle the climate crisis head-on," he said.

Khan also addressed the controversial topic of President Trump's recent state visit to the UK. He believes that the government should not shy away from criticizing Trump's views on the climate emergency and his praise for coal.

"We should be honest and candid, especially with our closest allies," Khan emphasized. "The special relationship between the UK and the US should be one of honesty and openness."

As the debate continues, Khan leaves us with a thought-provoking question: "Do we want the Mark Carney or the Keir Starmer approach to governance? Or is there a better way, the Sadiq Khan way?"

What do you think? Should the government prioritize green investment and take a stronger stance on climate issues? Share your thoughts in the comments!
